Yes, this is the case. The network infrastructure requires that any device touching the network be pre-registered, with enforcement implemented with the MAC address. If your MAC isn't registered you get placed into an isolated "rogue" VLAN. Once registered and connected, the devices are remotely scanned on a regular basis to insure security compliance and for billing purposes. There is apparently a way to configure Windows 7 to not use private addresses, since those devices are in use on the network. I hope someone can figure out how to do the same with openSuSE 12.1! BTW, I can't use Arch Linux here either, for reasons I'd rather not go into. But Ubutu apparently works... Regards.
