Not to hijack the thread but problems may be related...

I have the same on an Acer 5520 but atheros AR5BXB63 w/ath5k driver and NM
doesn't provide the opportunity to select wireless (grayed out).  "ifup
wlan0" does get a wireless address but only inet6.  No problem connedting
wired.
