But it sounds like the mtab/fstab backend is buggy. Please fix it :)

It completely correctly follows the Lanana specification. How can I
"correct" it further?
It is how it realized in openSUSE is wrong - it does not respect the
kernel's device naming policy.

Then every single distro shipping today is "wrong" according to you.

This is not impossible, right? Because they use the same kernel and share the
same bugs.
The *BSD distros on the other hand, use the device names as intended.
