Re: [opensuse-factory] Adding whois to enhanced base
Maybe ping, nslookup, etc but whois I can't think of a possible use in
troubleshooting the local system or its network. If I can not get on the
network i might use ping, nslookup, route, ifconfig, etc to troubleshoot the
connection, but i cant think of an instance that I would use whois to
troubleshoot the network connection. That's not to say I dont frequently use
whois, but if I do a minimal text install I really want a minimal as possible
system and anything beyond the bare basics should not be included. For that
reason whois should not be included in the base.

Do you think it's a good idea to add whois to the enhanced basis
pattern?

No. ...

I find it quite useful, so I have pushed it to my clone in
gitorious and requested a merge.

... isn't whois part of the pattern(s) which include the name
server(s)? There it would fit better.

Do you mean "dhcp_dns_server"? There you won't find whois. But yes,
it's part of "network_admin".

From my feeling it belongs more to the dhcp_dns_server and network_admin
selection.

"enhanced_base" also includes some network utilities ;-)

General network utilities are ok there. But whois? From my feeling
clearly no.

This was my decision too - I rejected the merge request before I actually
read this thread, but I'm happy I'm not the only one.

Greetings, Stephan
WhoIs is such a commonly used tool, I have to support adding it to base
package. I have found it annoying trying to remember what package contains it
since it is such a common tool in my observances. Besides, its so small...
would it really bloat the base package?
