Oh, THAT'S how you get to the channels!  What a way to do it! :-( .

SOOO much easier and sensible doing it using alsamixer or alsamixergui.

Having set the channels and volumes using alsamixer I have no need for 
the kmix "gidget" except to set the volume there to (almost) maximum - 
after which I simply forget about it.
