thank you, i did look into the log, but that didn't help me either. in the meantime my machine died (may it rest in peace), and i had to re-install on a different one. now, for some reason, no gcc errors appear. must have messed up something or other in the old install; no idea how, but that's history now.
Heh, hardware failure is a very good reason for GCC misbehaviour, the best you can get actually ;)
