*argh* good question - looks like I should cleanup my downlaod 
directory. This file was "slightly" outdated.

The fresh download from the nvidia website was newer, but...

... this one was even newer - and works :-)

Thanks for the pointer!

For the records: I also got the "nv" driver to work with dualhead 
(starts up in clone mode at KDM login, then I was able to configure it 
to dualhead mode in KDE. The trick was to remove my xorg.conf.
