[1] yes, reiserfs has an ioctl for lilo to call to ensure that the tail of a kernel image or initrd isn't packed so lilo can use it. That is a hack too.
Curious! Another method would be to mark those "unmovable" files with a special attribute (MsDos has it), so that they are treated specially by the kernel and all tools that could touch them. By the way, one of those bugs is that grub doesn't handle reiserfs well, it is broken (and reported).
