Hit send too fast...dang. Should have mentioned, that this is not an XFS problem but is a in the GRUB bootloader which insists in trying to write to a mounted, live file system. For some reason, the fact that GRUB couldn't do this to XFS was considered a problem with XFS, rather than in GRUB. Half my systems use lilo when they are correctly configured.
