I happenend to notice that after installing the nVidia binary drivers, one
need to run mkinitrd to put the kernel module in
the initrd. Then it runs (for me) perfectly without disabling anything.
When I didn't update the initrd I got also a crash and had
to disable kms to be able to get in. This would also explain why installing
a different kernel helps, it runs mkinitrd.
That gets around the disable KVM etc thing... but doesn't explain the
2 second freezes though does it? Which by the way are completely gone
with 2.6.35-rc6... no recurrence after several hours of heavy use
