I guess that was it. I branched the project out from openSUSE:Factory
[actually led to a branch from GNOME:Apps], changed the splash image
"gimp-branding-openSUSE-splash.png" with the one from the above link,
and built packages with the new splash-screens for factory and 11.2 over
at 
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/badshah400:/branches:/GNOME:/Apps/

Installed in 11.2 and on 11.3_RC1 and it now shows the 11.3 branded
splash-screen while starting up. 

Here's the diff so you can check if there is anything untoward --
