[opensuse-factory] manual for console modes while KMS=yes

Now that my Factory is using (32 bit) 2.6.32-desktop, apparently using KMS by
default, my i845G consoles, after starting in their usual vga=0x305 1024x768
mode, jump into some lowfi mode that is or approximates 640x480. I get same
result with i915.modeset=1. No man pages for randr, framebuffer or kms, and
man page for kernel does not address kms. Nomodeset on the kernel line makes
consoles behave OK, but X cannot find any screens with a usable configuration
(no kernel modesetting driver detected). How do I keep whatever benefits I'm
supposed to get from KMS and yet initialize tty[1-6] back the way I'm used
to, and have them stay that way, or can I? Is KMS broken for older Intel
chips? (currently I have X starting @ 1600x1200x16bpp)
Note, it seems pae kernel does not yet have KMS. If I boot it instead,
vga=0x305 works as before, but X cannot find any screens. With desktop
kernel, i915.modeset=0 on kernel line causes same behavior as pae kernel.
http://en.opensuse.org/Special:Search?search=kms&go.x=0&go.y=0&go=Go got me
only 4 hits, none of which seem to be docs in an expected form, but did point
me to Eich's KMS announcement post on this list, where I found we using
openSUSE are to use nomodeset instead of nokms like with other distros' KMS
kernels.
