VESA uses a hard coded set of modes. Your's may not be among them.
I think only VBE 3.0 supports programmable modes (need to recheck to be
sure) but VBE 3.0 support is often broken anyway as it is not used by any
(commercial) OS vendor.

This is an interesting case. Interesting, if there's a man who can
explain hardcoded set of resolutions with reasonable arguments...

Because standards are only good when they are easy to implement, and back in
the days everybody was using 4:3 screens and resolutions didn't explode like
they do these days, so this was something everybody could agree to
Today it is only important as fall back option, so why push ahead with a more
complicated standard if the old one does the error resolving case pretty good?
