"modprobe nvidia" should also throw an error if the module is
successfully built and installed but has undefined symbol errors.

modprobe gives no error, and after lsmod tells me:
nvidia 3931788 0

That means that the module is loaded right?

My NVidia setup works fine w/o /etc/X11/xorg.conf or using sax2. Try,
mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.trial

With the driver from nvidia? Or the standard nv driver?

since you have the nvidia module loaded, system should go to runlevel 5 ok.

init 5

log in

I had no problem with going to runlevel 5 because nothing of my configuration
was changed :-). Just: the system is still using nv instead of nvidia...

I'll send a "complain" to nvidia.
Thanks to all
Karl
