Booting without initrd does not work. I have / under LVM control.
Any ideas why mkinitrd fails ?

Look at/vote for/add comments to bug# 505670
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=505670

I comment out my lvm drive in /etc/fstab, boot to run-level 1, un-comment
the lvm drive line in /etc/fstab, "mount -a", init 5
and good to go.

will not work for you if /root is lvm :^(
