my experience with KDE 4.1 - 3 is that it's gotten a lot more efficient 
recently. kwin & plasma used to run away with my CPU frequently, but that's 
a lot better now.

no experience with 4.4 yet; according to aron seigos blog  
<http://aseigo.blogspot.com/> they're putting effort into keeping it civil. 
according to my experience with plasma so far, i have no reason to doubt 
him.
