If you have a copy of SYSTEM RESCUE DISC (search for it) then you can
mount the partition containing the oS installation and use mc (Midnight
Commander) to do the renaming of menu.lst.old --- or do any other
fiddles you want :-) . (Read the instructions which come up in SRD about
creating a mount directory to mount devices. Nothing big, but important.)

I used to use the installation DVD, with the option "repair", or even
"single mode", in case I need to edit something manually into the broken
system.

My M7 is a virtual-machine, so I always have a working copy and other
which is the "under test" version :-) .

Cheers,

Ah, OK. I which case may I suggest that the next time you have a problem
please give all the relevant details about your setup when asking for
assistance. Nobody here has a crystal ball :-) , and solutions may be
provided with less time wasting if all relevant, at least the basic,
details are provided to begin with :-) .
