This may be a kernel regression that has reared its head
again after it was squashed at least a couple of years ago.

It could be that floppy is active in BIOS, although there is none installed.
I've got such MB.

OK, I shall check it next reboot. I haven't looked at the BIOS in months
and can't see why it would have changed.

I lied, it was on in the BIOS, disabling it cured the problem, but it
looks like the old problem which if you had a floppy drive installed,
you needed to insert a non-bootable formatted floppy to stop this happening.
Going back 2 or 3 years, this email address used to be reported as SPAM
on the kernel mailing list by the new filter they installed. As my ISP
reports a problem nationwide which doesn't allow me to use he alternate
email address, I used this one hoping it will let my mail through.
Regards
Sid.
