If you have a tool which allows dist upgrade without server downtime,
you can upgrade much easier than with the need to boot from installation
medium.

After this, you will not need updates for the old version any longer,
and you have newer version of lots of packages.

If plus or minus, just depends on the quality of the "dist upgrade" tool.

Dist-upgrade concept is now clear.

But what happen to, for example, 11.0 kernel updates after 18 months?

Nothing.

If you want/need a newer kernel, you would just use the glorious "dist upgrade" tool before and you are at 11.x with newer kernels.

If it works without service downtime...
