you have a standard 11.1 system? I can't remember this existing on my
original 11.1 before I continued onto factory. I only noticed this when
I was trying to find out if kde systems were preventing a package from
working properly.

Hi, I noticed that gnome was offered as an option in kdm4's login screenHi Dave
and made the mistake of selecting it out of curiosity. This resulted in
a blank screen with a mouse pointer from which there was no normal exit,
except for switching to root console and init 3 then init5,
unfortunately I have autologin enabled so that took me back to to gnome.
The only way I could get out of this trap was to edit
/etc/sysconfig/displaymanager DISPLAYMANAGER_AUTOLOGIN setting to
disable auto login and then get back to kde.
This is a bug and I was wondering if anybody else has filed a bug
against this, before I make one?

I have a similar problem that I can get the blank screen with a mouse
pointer, but can get past this stage by switching to a console and
issuing a kill against the 'xcompmgr -c' process
This only happens on one machine - an openSuSE 11.1 64 bit system with
the nvidia drivers. I haven't found a fix for it yet.
Cheers
Pete
