Hi,

As far as I understand the network settings in Yast is unable to change
host- names, domain servers etc. when network manager is running. This is
clearly indicated by the warning dialog that pops up any time one tries to
use network-settings module in Yast, while using the network manager.

It is (able to change hostnames). Just close the warning dialog and switch
to hostname/DNS tab of network configuration. There you can set any
hostname you want :) I've blogged on it few months back:
http://hedgehogpainter.livejournal.com/3916.html

Some background info on this: we (yast2-network maintainers) had been asked
to put the warning pop-up in and to disable any network configuration by
YaST once NetworkManager is in charge of controlling the network.
It was only later it's been found out that some bits and pieces can be still
configured via YaST only as no adequate replacement for them has been
implemented in NetworkManager, hostname being the most prominent example of
those ...
It was thus easier to enable some configuration in YaST again (while keeping
the initial warning) than to trying to implement it in NM so late in the
release phase

So
one understands that all this (setting hostnames, etc.) can be set from
network- manager. However, the default (wired) connection in the
gnome-network-manger applet is locked and allows the changing of none of
these values.

Afair, it (setting hostnames) was supposed to be implemented for 11.2 (as it
was too late for 11.1). I tried to do some bugzilla digging around and all
roads lead to Rome .. erm all duplicate link to this bug:
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=440809
which is closed as fixed
I
But otherwise, no clue. I don't hack on NM ...

hB.

I read your blog when it was put up, and that is why I tried to change the
hostname despite the warning. This is with M3, and it did not work. I will try
again with M4 and let you know if it does or file a bug if it doesn't. By the
way, the warning could be rewritten to something like "Some settings might not
work, as nm is running" instead of the "Cannot configure network-settings from
Yast as nm is running" which appears now. Thanks.
