?? Maybe the "you" is a problem.. Does he, "you", control the
copyright or is it controlled by a very large group of individuals?

IANAL, yet afaict you control the copyright to subsystems you have
contributed. If that is core you basically control the kernel. That's
how the usb subsystem got pure "export gpl". A friend of mine now won't
use linux as he just wanted to play with it and needs to buy a new usb
wlan stick to play this game. Ain't gonna happen.
