Listmates, Running KDE3 and KDE43 in parallel and having worked specifically with the radeonhd driver on the heating issue, there is something in KDE4 that isn't interfacing properly with the fglrx driver resulting in the interruption of the normal downclocking and graphics chipset powerdown that normally takes place with the fglrx driver. This results in my laptop running significantly hotter when then occurs. (hot enough you don't want to keep your hand on the left palm rest) I can use KDE43 for an hour or so with no problem, then something happens and the graphic chip gets stuck in its "full-clock" mode and the heat builds up and the fans get louder. When it happened the first time, I thought power management might be the culprit, but it just happened again and there were no screen-saver or power-management triggers that would cause it. My Toshiba laptop has the ATI RS690M chipset [x1200]. With kde3, using the fglrx driver. With kde3, it can run forever without any interference with proper downclocking or unused gpu circuitry powerdown. With kde43, it starts behaving properly, then as discussed above, something breaks the normal downclocking. I have worked with the guys on the (suse)radeonhd list fairly heavily on this exact issue and have been testing the patches in the downclocking branch of the git repository there. The radeonhd currently doesn't have the same level of downclocking for ATI chips and it makes a huge difference in laptop temps so testing is ongoing as they improve the downclocking offered by the radeonhd driver. Whatever is happening in kde43, it is causing the fglrx driver to lose its ability to downclock the chip and is causing the same heat issues we are dealing with using the radeonhd driver. Like I said earlier, flgrx/kde3 and I can run for days without a restart and I get no heat issues at all. What this suggests is there may have been a bug introduced in the kde4 code that is preventing normal operation of the fglrx driver. There are no events captured in Xorg.0.log that shed any light on the problem, but I'm attaching it just in case you want to have a look. Now I have to restart before my palms are cooked to 'medium-well'. Let me know if you can think of any additional information that may help diagnose this issue. Thanks. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
