Did you try vga=0x31a ?
0x1f = 31, thus it sounds like this is what causes your trouble.
Yes, thanks, that was it. So simple!
I'm just wondering where the "0x" got lost - I had YaST2 propose me a new
setup for the added Windows harddisk, and merged that with the existing grub
setup.
