Most likely, if the update is to SuSE kernel-default it alters that,
not kernel-ilya or whatever.
Basically so long as you can boot, and have a copy of rpm's of a
working kernel version, or a backup of the files, then you can keep a
fall back boot option, which won't be updated, because all the files
of each kernel version install to different places.

3-it left the .27 kernel because it was not from a configured repository
(installed via rpm directly)?
