Well, my main desktop machine is dual core with 4GB of RAM, still when I upgrade it to the latest SuSE, the first thing I do is to remove / disable unnecessary services. Even here it makes a marked difference. And while a few years ago one of the benefits of Linux was that it ran on any old hardware, where Windows was not an option, this is not the case any more.
