While the autoconfig has *always* worked for me ( :&) ), I *usually*
just carry over my previous:
from /etc/ntp.conf:
server 0.us.pool.ntp.org
server 1.us.pool.ntp.org
server 2.us.pool.ntp.org
server 3.us.pool.ntp.org
Note: for US locations, but a search of http://www.pool.ntp.org/zone/
will supply localized pool addresses.
