Yes it does (even without needing to make any of the adjustments you
suggested). So I guess this shows that it's really a bug in
kupdateapplet, and not a problem with the zypper backend.

I have filed a bug report under

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=455756

I classified the bug as "major," since I guess many users will want to
install MP3 support and similar things from the packman repository in
this way, and will run into the same problems.
