I have noticed in all of the betas quite a bit of software missing.
The main ones I use are mcedit and nmap. Is this expected?

I don't know about SLED betas, this is factory, after all. The mcedit program is included, but I believe it is not installed by default. Perhaps it is not included in the live CD.
