Which other features? Emerald is not a critical piece of software, there are three more decorators available, emerald not working does not reduce any features provided by Compiz, including pretty decorators- use better theme.
How many decorations let me easily manage the size of the taskbar? I couldn't figure it out with compiz-decorations (which uses the kde themes). If you could explain how I could do this quite easily.. then i'd be more then estatic (even this function is quite easy in Windows).
Emerald does not have any upstream maintainer, it started out as a fork of gnome-window-decorator and has been an ugly beast to keep up-to-date, there have been talks of its rewrite many times in past with nothing happening in that regards.
So would the gnome-window-decorator patch to with with 0.7.8 w/ NOMAD, work for emerald?
Nomad is upstream in it's own branch, http://gitweb.compiz-fusion.org/?p=compiz;a=shortlog;h=refs/heads/nomad-0.7 .8
So I am guessing.. that's a no? It won't be shipped without haha.
Why will it be negative? We have something additional "NOMAD" that other distros do not have, you also have choice to run compiz packages without nomad patches and working emerald from X11:XGL repo.
It is negative because people don't understand why they don't get emerald in this realease, and were not told prior (release notes is not a good place to say "why we removed this" also a place to explain what the nomad patch does, and how it makes it a better release then what the other distros have.). Emerald (if removed) is not the only app that got pulled without warning (ie RealPlayer.. i understand it's a licensing issue there, but a warning or something on news.opensuse.org would be quite helpful.
I suspect 99% of users do not know they can use different decorator and do not care if emerald does not exist. Same look/feel can be achieved by using gtk/kde3/kde4-window-decorator by using better theme anyway.
Many people I know run emerald.
Indeed :)
Let's not treat emerald not working as the end of civilization ;)
haha.. I know it's not the end of civilizatoin, but i sure am sad to see it go :( ..
