Is there a way to add an application icon to the task bar in 11.1 with
KDE 4.1? I've tried everything I can think of and it's a "no go."

This is not really relevant here I think, you should join the -kde
mailinglist.

Here's how to do it.. dunno if it's very complex, you tell me.

1) Unlock widgets (right click on panel/desktop -> unlock widgets)

2) Open kickoff (the default menu) -> right click on the item you want -> add
to panel

You can also drag from kickoff to the panel, but it can be a little tricky
finding the right pixel to drop on.

If you're using the classic menu, only drag and drop is possible - no right
click -> add to panel option in that one.

Also, how does one
reduce the size of icons on the desktop?!

What desktop icons?

The icons in folderview? Right click folderview applet -> folderview settings
-> display

If you've added application icons to the desktop you can resize them the same
as any other widget - unlock widgets -> pull on the handle.
