Hmm, can auto-suspend be disabled if the (default) runlevel is 3? IMHO
using runlevel 3 is a very good indication that a machine is used as
server ;-)
Very little people use gnome in runlevel 3.

Having things like apache, mysql or samba daemons running is also a good
indication for a server - maybe the initscripts of these daemons could
also disable auto-suspend.

Please check the form factor of HAL on these machines. And no, samba (sharing
files with windows) and mysql (akonadi and amarok) are bad examples.

lshal | grep system.formfac

Unless it's "desktop" or "laptop", there is nothing to fear. ("unknown" here)

Greetings, Stephan
