su(x) without -. You need to have DISPLAY=:0 in the environment,
regardless of authentication.

You are a disbeliever, I see. I tell you it does not work, this is a
new, and reported, bug in factory:

minas-morgul:~ # logout
cer@minas-morgul:~> xhost +localhost
localhost being added to access control list
cer@minas-morgul:~> set | grep DISPLAY
DISPLAY=:0.0
cer@minas-morgul:~> su -
Password:
minas-morgul:~ # set | grep DISPLAY
minas-morgul:~ # export DISPLAY=:0.0
minas-morgul:~ # gconf-editor
Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 keyCannot open display:
I sometimes get this error to and have found a work-around. may be it
will work for you to. As root go to the home dir of the user running the
Desktop. The following works for me:

s050436: /home/jarno # cp .Xauthority ~/.Xauthority
(The file has a name like this, typing .Xauth and auto-completion should
give it, currently i'm working under windows and can't check it)
now root should get access to the display

Run 'gconf-editor --help' to see a full list of available command line
options.
minas-morgul:~ # set | grep DISPLAY
DISPLAY=:0.0
minas-morgul:~ #
