How?

xhost +localhost (yes, it's insecure, but on a local workstation ...)
More secure: ssh -X root@localhost

Doesn't work:

minas-morgul:~ # logout
cer@minas-morgul:~> xhost +localhost
localhost being added to access control list
cer@minas-morgul:~> sux -
Password:
minas-morgul:~ # gconf-editor

We used to have 'sux' in former times for exactly that reason, I don't
know where and why it's gone.

Sux can be recreated, it is a symlink. I have done so, but it doesn't
work, either. I can not even run Yast in graphical mode.
