The problem here is that the arch of rpm is going to be changed from
x86_64 to i586. This will cause a broken update, because after installing
the new rpm package, zypper can't install remaining x86_64.rpms any
more.
Should I file a bug against zypper or is this just an unsupported action
or is there a problem with the repo ?

Yes, this is a bug, I don't know whose. Wait for comments, I think.

I've opened <https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=432304> for that.
