PHP is very robust on any distro it will

it is actually not that robust and a very complex piece of software.

Server:php:extensions isn't listed in "community repositories" in
yast2... for that I will file a bug report.

Yes.

This is not a bugreport. How exactly does one fix this "user error"
you speak of? magiclib & magiclib-devel &phpize are installed.

to build this extension, you need to have installed

autoconf, automake, libtool, php5-devel, file-devel, gcc, make

then edit config.m4 replace all ocurrences of the pattern "/lib" with $PHP_LIBDIR.

run phpize ..configure.. make... make install...

...but just use the server:php:extensions repo ..I have invested significant amount of time on it, and should work just fine nowdays.

cheers.
