Yes.
to build this extension, you need to have installed
autoconf, automake, libtool, php5-devel, file-devel, gcc, make
then edit config.m4 replace all ocurrences of the pattern "/lib" with $PHP_LIBDIR.
run phpize ..configure.. make... make install...
...but just use the server:php:extensions repo ..I have invested significant amount of time on it, and should work just fine nowdays.

PHP is very robust on any distro it will
compile just fine.

Server:php:extensions isn't listed in "community repositories" in
yast2... for that I will file a bug report.

This is not a bugreport. How exactly does one fix this "user error"
