/sda_mbr bs=512 count=1" I still prefer paper, it works better for recovery problems. Plus, you are saving the MBR program, too.
/etc seems to change causing rsync a problem, so I "tar cjfv /
/etc.tar.bz2 /etc" I don't follow you here.
I backup everything, I restore everything, or as needed. I haven't had problems with "/etc". Tar is slower, specially if you want to see a single file.
This is going way back when I saw the problem, restoring /etc, some things didn't match up, perhaps differences in file requirements between the old install and the upgrade.
