What "sloppiness"? An automatic desktop login does not make a system less 
secure. Someone needs physical access to the machine to log in 
automatically. And if someone gains physical access, even the strongest 
passwords are worthless! In order to protect your system in such a 
scenario, you need encryption and strong passwords for the encryption keys.
