I have installed from the DVD. The vmware-kmp-default was not
installed during the install. After the install finished, I enabled
the online repositories, and then it appeared as suggested update in
yast, and I installed it.

It did not pre-select open-vm-tools though, that's why I was not aware
for it's existence. I'll try as soon as possible, and will report
back.

Btw, I really agree that these 2 packages should be on the install
media, and even pre-selected for install if the necessary conditions
are met.
