I was wrong: 10.3 does not recognise the USB HD partition formatted in NTFS. It did until some recent upgrade- what that upgrade was I don't know.
Kubuntu 8.04 LIVE recognises the NTFS partition, Windows XP of course recognises it, and Manrdiva 2008 LIVE recognises it but openSUSE 10.3 (now) does not recognise it (comes up with the error I mentioned earlier) and neither does 11.0 Beta 1 nor 2 (which had some 980+ upgrades done today).
With 11.0 Beta due out tomorrow I'll see if the problem still shows up in that.
(What I don't understand is why nobody else has mentioned this problem. So, is this suddenly only affecting me? Doubt it.)
Curious!
Maybe some update or patch broke it and was backported to 10.3.
Did you run the checkdisk in XP?
Oh yes. And I always do it manually, using the DOS Command line because I discovered years ago that some Windows apps. - like XP's "chkdsk" - tell you lies when you use them to check the condition of the file system. Did more testing and found that Kubuntu LIVE (which uses kernel 2.6.24-16) and Mandriva LIVE (kernel 2.6.22-9) not only recognises the external USB HD with an NTFS partition but also recognises ALL of the other Windows partiontions on my dual boot system. openSUSE 10.3 (kernel 2.6.22.17-01) does not recognise the NTFS partition (as I mentioned already) - but it did at the beginning. openSUSE 10.3 KDE LIVE (kernel 2.6.22.5-31) does NOT recognise the NTFS USB's partition but DOES recognise it if the external USB HD is switched on when the LIVE is 'booted'. Now, the interesting part: v11.0 KDE4.1 Alpha LIVE (kernel 2.6.22.17-01, same as in current 10.3) doesn't see all the other partitions of an installed system BUT does recognise the NTFS partition on the external USB HD when it is switched on after the Alpha is running. I am waiting for the Beta, promised to be released today, to see if this "feature" of openSUSE has been solved.
