[opensuse-factory] Getting errors "Root privileges are required" and "su returned with an error"

This is after an upgrade to Factory from openSUSE 10.3. In addition,
the 'sux' command is no longer found. When trying to update, for
example, I never get prompted for the root password and updating fails
with "Root privileges are required" and "su returned with an error".
What changed and how can I get the old update behavior back? Perhaps
a 'sudo' issue?
