You're limiting your perspective of use cases. I agree that imap gives
flexibility. However, limiting yourself to a single laptop machine you
take everywhere doesn't allow for flexibility. Some of us don't like
lugging our laptops around day in and day out. In my opinion, you're
more at the mercy of the laptop than at multiple machines available to
you at work, home and such.
How about using a crackberry...
