Thanks for the quick response. i tried using YaSt to update all the YaSt RPMS
but got the same error on most of them. I'll try the zypper in rpm from the
command line as root later today. Hope thats right, I'm just learning zypper.
Always used YaST in the past. I like what I've seen of zypper, just need to
learn all the features.
Thanks again.

Yast shows I need updates of YaSt and other programs. Using YaST2 -->
Software Management I can select updates but downloading gives the
following errors:
Subprocess failed. Error: RPM failed: error: unpacking of archive
failed: cpio: Bad magic

error: unpacking of archive failed: cpio: Bad magic
2008-04-01 16:05:56 yast2-trans-stats-2.15.0-69.noarch.rpm
install failed rpm output:
error: unpacking of archive failed: cpio: Bad magic
i know there wer comments on the mailing list about this but I have not
found them in archive 9must be searching wrong)
Do "zypper in rpm" first, or use yast to just update rpm. Then
continue updating as normal.
