[This is what I just announced to our internal community,
please take it as an extended status report for Factory]
Hi,
As Alpha2 is already a month ago and we need more testing before
publishing Alpha3, I decided to master a snapshot - and call it
(out of tradition) Alpha2plus.
This release won't be published (of course everyone can do Factory
installations and will get the same snapshot), it's merely to have
a fixed snapshot with a name. It also has many bugs still, but ever
since hackweek I tried to get a snapshot without blocker bugs and this
one is the first one, so I want to have it out for more testing -
even if we're aware of several critical:
- the package bindings do not work correctly, so every decision yast
does based on packages installed fails (bug 367210). This includes:
* wrong runlevel chosen
* no Xorg config in second stage
* always tries to use gdm even if not installed
- ncurses frontend in second stage (always used, see above) will
complain about `back_rep twice (bug 367213)
- second stage will ask about auth method even if you created user
in first stage (bug 364066)
Now that you're aware of the most annoying bugs, let me list some
highlights produced since alpha2 (partly during hackweek):
- zypp speed improved dramatically (faked statistics speak about factor 10)
- a new theme is used for installation
- tons of bug fixes and new versions of packages, only to list a little
selection:
* kernel 2.6.24.1
* cups 1.3.6
* gimp 2.4.5
* GNOME 2.21.91
* KDE 3.5.9
* KDE 4.0.1
* OpenOffice.org 2.4 RC2
Greetings, Stephan
