Hi,
Recently I was installing openSUSE on my mums computer (ok, it was 10.3, but
nevertheless I think my post belongs to this list, as I know nothing like this
will be changed for a released version but it might happen for a future
version).
So the situation: Her computer is connected via VGA to a TV (yes, not computer
screen). The TV supports a resolution of 640x480@60Hz (it's ugly for all of
us.. but she just does not want to find a place for another ugly screen).
with this screen, the Grub Boot Menu is not showed but there is only flickering
on the screen. By knowing what keypresses are needed, I selected Resolution
640x480 for the installation and the rest went smoothly after. Of course for
after the installation I had to give her a textmode grub (timing out in 2
seconds, as she'll never ever use another entry.. they are for me ;) )
At what mode does the GRUB menu actually operate? Is this mode mandatory for
some reasons or could we reduce it? The main approach should be to go as low as
possible at the beginning and increase with sanity as much as possible later...
but not being able to see the first screen to select resolutions or start the
installation can be quiet an issue (of course first question was: but windows
worked on this computer, why is this happening).
Nevertheless: she's a happily converted user... all she ever does is starting
firefox, play some nifty flash games and use Thunderbird for mailing and pidgin
for IM... so she's perfectly happy (after the installation once passwd).
Best regards,
Dominique
