This is a bug that has been around (in KDE) for years and it seems is a
WONTFIX at KDE, though it remains ASSIGNED in the openSuSE bugzilla.
(they say that I have not enough RAM :-( ).

There is a work-around that I described then:

Wait for KDE to be fully started
Right click on desktop, select "Configure Desktop" -> "Behaviour"
clear tick-box "Show icons on desktop"
Click "Apply"
Wait for KDE to action this
Set tick-box "Show icons on desktop"
Click "Apply" or "OK"

Should be back to normal.
