On my 32-bit install that's not the case:
opensuse:/home/francis # ls -lh /dev/vboxdrv
crw-rw---- 1 root vboxusers 10, 62 2007-09-27 11:58 /dev/vboxdrv
...might be a good idea to file a bug report then? I take it that it
worked for you after that?
