Yes, you're doing something the wrong way, like everybody starting with zypper.
by using
# zypper lu
zypper only shows patches, as also "zypper up" only is going to install patches.
What you're looking for is
zypper list-updated -t package
and
zypper up -t package
That will give the result you're expecting.
