There are kernel updates, but smart doesn't "see" them because they have version numbers that make smart think the kernel has been downgraded.
The kernel version you probably have installed is:
kernel-default-2.6.20_rcX
The current kernel is:
kernel-default-2.6.20
The latter is newer, but the former "looks" newer to the package manager because the version comparison algorithm considers the "longer" version "newer" if there is no difference between two versions other than one of them being "longer".
In short, you have to update the kernel package manually:
sudo smart install kernel-default-2.6.20
