At least 0.5 is not a replacement.
bluez-gnome-0.6 is slightly better. It's still not a full replacement, but provides at least a basic configuration dialog to make the computer visible to other devices. What do you think, is an update to this version something to consider? Who would be able to do it? Would it get approved by the project management? I'll have to make a bugzilla about this because I think that the new version is clearly better, the current one not really useful and the risk very low.
bluez-gnome provides PIN dialog, gnome-bluetooth provides OBEX server (and unuseful device browser). This is covered by:
[Bug 219371] Bluetooth device GNOME support needs many icons in tray area https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=219371
bluez-gnome will in the future provide much more functionality, among others an OBEX server and maybe even more. I have already filed https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=220448 (against 10.3) to make sure that the needed infrastructure is in place. bluez-gnome might be able to replace one or even two other tray icons in the future.
